How does Earth function in the Star Trek universe?

In the Star Trek universe Earth no longer has currency it no longer has money it has evolved past that into a utopian society where people do what they want? But then like…

We go to meet Siskos dad who owns a Creole resturant, and it is frequented by many aliens and it is very popular. Do they just walk in and give him handshakes. Just congratulate him on a good meal?

Will this be enough?

I think the problem is the person that states that is Picard. He could say that because we never had to spend extended periods on Earth. The Rodenberry vision is great and all but just the brief glimpses we get of it seem flawed. The DS9 station must of given its crew members Latinum or some credit because the crew has to pay for meals and drinks at Quarks and pay to receive Holosuite time.

I am just genuinely curious. How does it work on earth? Do you take away what latinum you have earned? Do you just have it stripped away or is it garbage on earth?

I just… want to know.

The Ferengi society is the complete capitalist society and we have seen how it has it’s flaws and how it was failing, and Earth seems to be the opposite if I had to guess that is an extreme that is unsustainable as well. We as modern humans are the Ferengi and star fleet is something we should aim for? Or is it too much?

Opinions? Thoughts?

Just a short post.

Why I like Star Trek more than Star Wars

Granted this is not a one is better than the other sort of situation they are both completely different with their own merit.

The difference between the two is Science Fiction vs Science Fantasy.

Rod Serling said the difference between Science Fiction and Science Fantasy is that the former was “the improbable made possible” while the latter was “the impossible made probable”

I think I sort of disagree on that.

I think it is where it’s core is.

In Science Fiction the science is always the core of the story even if it is in a fantastical setting, and I accept that my favorite show, DS9. Does in fact have many fantasy elements in it, but there is a coherent science behind it all.

Science Fantasy uses science as its backdrop to put its self in a fantastical setting. For example you would never say Star Wars had great science in it. In Star Wars you could put them in the past make some of the aliens elves and orcs and it would be the same heart. The story would not change really. Lasers are bows and arrows, giant tanks are like war elephants etc.

But the core story of Star Wars would be the same just the interpretation would be different.

You take away the science of Star Trek and its core is gone, the whole point was that it was the future, it was a Utopian earth (in theory) that was exploring and expanding.

It was all about meeting and interacting with new aliens.

But like for real, so gross.

But like for real, so gross.

Even though I like the KotOR story much more than the movie story, Star Wars IS a good story. But I don’t think anyone would really fight that its science and its world in that way are kind of…well kind of poopy. In TNG, Ds9, and ToS (I have not seen Voy so I cant talk on that) the races all made sense. The Kardassians were lizard esque and had evolved to like warmer temperatures. The Trill sought to be joined with the Symbiant. There of course were the background races that were just silly but even they got development.

In Star Wars it just has a limitless amount of races anywhere. Hey this is big head guy his head is big, this is jewish alien, this is the big fly people. It is very interesting but like a fantasy story it does not feel the need to expand upon its races. Only a select few got actual development on it, why? Because it simply was not important to the story. Star Wars was never about world building and universe expansion, it was always about it’s story.

But I want to get sucked in! I want to get attached to characters and races and lore. I

love

lore.

Star Wars is great, give me a two episode arch about how Ferengi deal with labor unions any day.

The Singularity (?)

Sitting in class the lecture today is about the singularity I guess, it is about the end of humanism as we know it. Why do people, especially those in the older generation fear the singularity.

That they fear change so much they immediately assume the rise of A.I will mean the loss of human life will mean that humanity must vanish? These same people who believe television kills brain cells and the same people who believe that video games make you kill also believe that robots will just like immediately want to kill all humans.

Well, i mean they do right?

Well, i mean they do right?

There is nothing to fear with the progression of technology. I cannot imagine a world where these people who fear technology are given more power.

When clothes were made did people assume they would want to strangle and take us over Kill la Kill style? When computers were first made people assumed that they were putting thoughts in our head sterilizing us and making us gay. Yes, that was indeed a real series of thoughts that people in the 60’s had.

Technology has always been feared from the start and it just… well it pisses me off that this professor is trying to instill a fear of technology into the younger generation, a fear of change into those that will be doing the changing. There is nothing to fear.

A.I: True A.I is no where near completion, we have made robots who can self identify but only when that is their programming. We have reached the peak of maybe Virtual Intelligence. But true Artificial Intelligence does not exist so fear mongering something that does not exist is a waste of space and time, a waste of thought. I am afraid of aliens, but is that a rational fear? No! So I don’t try to teach to a room full of college kids about how we should ALL be afraid of them.

EWWWW

EWWWW

Besides if the singularity is inevitable if it is unavoidable then accept it. The next stage of evolution, and evolution we created. Get used to it dude.

What are your thoughts on it?

Lost in Space

So about three or so days ago I finished Star Trek DS9, well you after this I feel adrift. This show was there during one of the hardest times for me when I was happy it was there when I was sad it was there now, it is over it is gone. When I finished TNG I went right into DS9 so no time for mourning no time to feel sad.

Deep Space Nine is truly the greatest Science Fiction show to ever have existed (at least from seasons 4 and onward). The universe was so well constructed the world so fleshed out, characters so true. Dr. Julian Bashir is one of my favorite characters in any medium let alone sci fi.

Smart handsome, genetically engineered.

I mean look at that smug face

I do not know what to do with myself you see, I want to act. I want to be an actor and I’ve always wanted to be in a science fiction show and Deep Space Nine would be the dream, the actual fantasy.

So what do I do now, that I can’t live this fantasy out in this show?

I don’t know. But I am listening to a Deep Space Nine podcast to fill the entertainment void and who knows maybe one day I will find something else.

Do any of you have any suggestions? Please comment if you do! If you give me a new show to watch I will post my thoughts on it!

What is this going to be? (Spoilers: Nerd Stuff)

Hey!

So this a first post I guess.

This blog will be everything ranging from posts about Dungeons and Dragons to Star Trek to hell personal life rants.

Who am I you may ask? Basically a huge nerd. Like a real bad one. But that is who I am I accept that. I marathon through Star Trek series, I play online games excessively but I offset that by having a hot girlfriend and a fairly charming personality in real life, so no gross beard here.

The Digital Man himself.

The Digital Man himself.

I hope to keep this alive and well but stay with me if anyone is reading this, I will post creative writing some days and reviews of Sci Fi the next who knows! I am a mysterious man I assume, a not so mysterious man in the Digital Age.
